NEW STRAITS TIMES news

Drive and shoot

The first of its kind here, Tourism Malaysia’s Foto Explorace is a unique event that tested the photography and navigational skills of participants.

SAGER AHMAD writes

FOR some, it was a fun hunt with lots of excitement. Some others had plenty of drive left at the end while a few ran out of steam midway through the endurance test of sorts.

Yes, this was the recent “Treasure Hunt/Foto Explorace” organised by Tourism Malaysia in conjunction with its ongoing Malaysian Photo Festival 2005.

It seemed a simple enough route to Bagan Datoh in Lower Perak for participants in 30 cars flagged off from the Malaysian Tourism Centre in Jalan Ampang.

Along the way, participants had to stop at many places to snap pictures of the Petronas Twin Towers, Istana Negara, the National Mosque, the Bird Park, Tugu Negara, Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM), Bukit Malawati and the Sungai Dorani Homestay Village in Kuala Selangor, Teluk Intan leaning tower and the Bagan Datoh Jetty.

There was an average of three photographers in each car, all armed with digital cameras with all kinds of lenses and big memory cards that allowed them to ‘shoot away’ at anything and not worry about running out of film.

Unfortunately, some didn’t know when to stop and thus held back the race. For instance, there were those who did not want to leave the Bird Park as they were waiting for some birds to flex their legs or wings, open their eyes or come fluttering down from a branch.

FRIM was a place where some participants got ‘lost’ – not as in direction but rather they found so many things to ‘shoot’ that they forgot that they were in a race!

Leaving FRIM, everyone was caught in a massive traffic jam and wasted expensive fuel and a valuable two hours sitting it out.

At Bukit Malawati, participants left their cars and rode to the top on a wagon pulled by a tractor. They were greeted by a startling sight – a group of dark silver leaf monkeys. It looked like the whole monkey family was out on a picnic with some of the primates carrying their bright orange newborn babies.

It was rather funny to see both the photographers (including some foreigners) and the monkeys staring at each other in surprise! The monkeys, however, were very ”civil”, unobtrusive and unwittingly “posed” for shots.

Next stop was Pasir Penambang across the Selangor river but some participants missed it despite the clear signboards. Everyone then moved on to Sungai Dorani Homestay, a traditional Malay kampung house in a green padi field setting. Here, a photographer from Virtual Malaysia, Nazreen Nasir got a lucky shot of a metre-long belut (fresh water eel) caught by a young villager.

The convoy then moved through green and picturesque Sabak Bernam with acres of padi fields and swaying coconut palms before crossing a high bridge over the Bernam river into lower Perak.

Some cars went straight to the finishing point at Dewan Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at Simpang Empat, Hutan Melintang.

Others went to the two final spots stated in the Explorace tulips – the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Teluk Intan and the Bagan Datoh jetty.

The Foto Explorace may be the first time for such a treasure hunt in the country. It was unique in the sense that digital photography was involved and participants had to download their photos into their laptops and then burn their pictures on CDs to submit for judging. Everything happened at ‘breakneck’ speed and judging was completed the same day.

Apart from Malaysians, two teams had foreign members from Indonesia and Australia.

Deputy Tourism Minister and MP for Bagan Datoh Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi hosted a dinner for the participants. He said the Explorace was an excellent way to promote the many places in the country.

About RM20,000 worth of prizes in cash and kind were given away to winners.
